It was late. Mahogany floors were decorated with the scattered remains of disregarded clothing. In the bedroom, Ira and Ava slept. Ava had entangled herself in the soft linen of their shared bed. Her red wine hair spilled across her sheets and his chest.

Yellow eyes and fangs had plagued her dreams. The shadowy form of a four legged predator, hunting, hissing and circling around her. Sweat dripped from her forehead as she tossed and turned violently. She woke out of breath and clutching at her throat. Sucking in ragged breaths as if just resurfacing from a pummeling of staggered waves. She sat up and allowed her breathing to regulate itself back to a normal speed, before melting back into the comfort of her mattress, and into the arms of the demi-god who slept beside her, immune to her tormented writhing.

She dragged his arm across her chest and stared up at his beautifully sculpted face. Angular cheekbones and full lips made her think of how she loved those kissable lips. Brushing her fingers over them, she watched as the sides of his mouth twisted into a small smile.

“How can you sleep through all my noise, and wake with one gentle touch?” Ava whispered, as she trailed her finger across his chest.

Ira opened his eyes and smiled. “Selective sleeping.” She laughed.

“Had you been awake, you would have known I needed saving from this terrible nightmare I keep having–”

Ira responded with a sleepy ‘mhmm’ as he moved his hand along her curves, pulling her closer into him. His fingers toyed with the delicate fabric of her lace underwear that had somehow found their way back on.

“Did you dream we’d become abstinent?”

“Very funny,” Ava replied. “But I’m serious.”

Ira’s chest rose and fell with the hum of his breathy laugh.

“You know I’d kill anyone or anything that ever put you in danger.” He said it sleepily, yet reassuringly.

“Good,” Ava murmured into his neck, her hot breath tickling his skin.

“Now go back to sleep, before I’m forced to tire you out myself.”

“Can you stay up with me? Just for a little while?”

There was a grumbled response. Ira was exhausted and all he wanted to do was sink back into sleep for a few more hours. But if he had to remain awake…

“Guess I’m going to have to tire you out,” he said, his finger circling the inside of her thigh.

It took every inch of her self-control to pull away from him, but she did. Leaving his warm embrace in favor of the cold, unused side of the bed - foreign territory for the crimson haired girl.

Ira let his hand drop away, sensing something wasn’t right.

“Okay, I’ll bite. What’s wrong?” he asked. His impeccable physique fully exposed as the sheets fell.

“It’s stupid,” she said.

He smiled. “Probably, but I still want to hear it.”

Ava let out a gentle sigh, rolling over onto her side to face the demi-god.

“Have you ever cared about somebody so much it physically hurt?” Ava asked as she sat up, pulling her legs up and wrapping her arms tightly around them.
